The editorial crossing · six stages

Show where the bridge begins.

A source-led edition should let a reader distinguish what survives, what has been inferred and what an editor has done to help the material cross into a modern form.

Scope of this method

A working discipline, not a credential.

This page describes the intended BidBont workflow for projects in preparation. It does not claim external accreditation, scholarly peer review or completion of every stage for every catalogue record.

  1. 01

    Define the record

State the project scope, catalogue status and claims the available material can support.

  2. 02

    Register the witnesses

Identify source objects, provenance and exact locators. Keep an unresolved source unresolved.

  3. 03

    Transcribe

Keep original-language text distinct from supplied, reconstructed or normalised text.

  4. 04

    Translate and annotate

Present translation and commentary as editorial work, never as the witness itself.

  5. 05

    Verify and disclose

Check claims, structure, locators, files and accessibility. Name what was checked without implying independent peer review.

  6. 06

    Authorise release

Only an authorised owner decision may change an in-preparation record into a released edition or sale offer.
